VPS Hosting Comparison
Virtual Private Server (VPS, also known as VDS or Virtual Dedicated Server) hosting is an ideal solution for users who need more power and flexibility than a shared hosting account can offer, but need a low cost alternative to a Dedicated Server. Our VPS accounts include full root access for complete control over your hosting environment giving you the ability to fine tune your system for peak performance, install custom software and set up custom network services.

VPS Technology at A2 Hosting

A2 Hosting offers two virtualization platforms for our VPS accounts: OpenVZ and Xen. Both platforms provide isolation from other VPS accounts on the server, but each has its own specific advantages. Key features of OpenVZ VPS systems include speed, user-friendliness and burstable memory. Xen VPS accounts feature a greater degree of resource isolation, support for custom Linux kernel compilation and full iptables access for complete control over incoming and outgoing network activity. See our Xen Vs. OpenVZ comparison page for a more detailed description of the differences between these two virtualization technologies.
The easy-to-use HyperVM control panel lets you choose from a variety OS templates for popular Linux distributions including Debian, CentOS, Fedora, Gentoo, Slackware, and Ubuntu. We also hand craft our own Custom OS Templates to suit popular server configurations. You can reload or re-image your OS template at any time in mere minutes!
LxAdmin Host-In-A-Box
LxAdmin is an extremely lightweight and efficient web hosting platform provided with our CentOS 5 Host-In-A-Box OS template. Through LxAdmin's intuitive web interface, you'll have access to administrate all the key features of your hosting environment including Login Management, Shell Access, Resource Plans, Domain Configuration, File Management, FTP, Backups, Databases, SSL Certificates, and more. A free demo of LxAdmin is available at http://demo.lxadmin.com:7778/.
Linux Operating System Comparison
CentOS
OS Templates
OpenVZ: 5 LxAdmin Host-In-A-Box, 5 Full, 5 LAMP, 5 LAPP, 5 FastCGI + Ruby on Rails, 5 Mongrel Pound + Ruby on Rails
Xen: 5, 5.1 LAMP, 5.1 RoR/Passenger/Mongrel, 5.1 Minimal
The goal of the CentOS Project is to provide a free enterprise class computing platform to anyone who wishes to use it. CentOs has an active and growing user community, an extensive mirror network as well as contactable and responsive developers. Free support is available via IRC, Chat, Mailing lists, Forums and a dynamic FAQ.
CentOS is built from publicly available open source SRPMS provided by a prominent North American Enterprise Linux vendor (think 'scarlet headgear') and it aims to be 100% binary compatible with packages from that vendor.
Fedora Core
OS Templates
OpenVZ: 8 (Werewolf)
Xen: 8 (Werewolf)
Fedora is built by a global community of developers: the Fedora Project. The Fedora Project aims to showcase the latest and greatest in free and open source software. Fedora is known as a forward-thinking Linux distribution and is always free for anyone to use, modify and distribute, now and forever. The Fedora Project is managed and directed by the Fedora Foundation and sponsored by Red Hat.
Debian
OS Templates
OpenVZ: 3.1 (sarge), 4.0 (etch)
Xen: 4.0 (etch)
Debian is one of the most popular choices for GNU/Linux developers. Used by a wide range of organizations as well as thousands of individuals, Debian offers an extensive user community with support available through the Debian Project's online documentation, Wiki, Mailing lists, Usenet groups and numerous websites.
Package management is quick and easy using the included apt-get system. A basic LAMP server can be set up in just a couple comands! Over 15,000 packages are ready to be installed on your system from a large selection of apt repositories.
Gentoo
OS Templates
OpenVZ: 2006
Xen: 2008
Gentoo is one of the most customizable Linux distribution available today. The Gentoo philosophy is that the user should be able to configure their system to do exactly what they want it to do in the most efficient manner possible - no more and no less. In line with this philosophy, all packages are compiled from source to your exact specifications. Your Gentoo powered VPS will be a very basic system (a 'Stage 3 Install') that includes GCC and SSHD. Please note that you'll need to be comfortable with compiling software to get the most out of Gentoo.
Gentoo is built around the Portage software distribution system and you'll need to use Portage whenever you add or update applications. Over 10,000 packages are available through Portage.
Slackware
OS Templates
OpenVZ: 12.0
The aim of the Slackware Linux Project is to produce the most "UNIX-like" Linux distribution while maintaining simplicity and stability. Since its first release in 1993, Slackware has become one of the most popular, stable and friendly Linux distributions available.
Slackware Linux is a complete 32-bit multitasking "UNIX-like" system. It's currently based around the 2.4 Linux kernel series and the GNU C Library version 2.3.4 (libc6). Our OS templates provide a minimal Slackware environment so that you can install packages as needed to suit your specific requirements. Available packages include extensive online documentation, a menu-driven package system, C/C++ development environments, Perl, networking utilities, a mail server, a news server, a web server, an ftp server, plus many more programs.
Ubuntu
OS Templates
OpenVZ: 7.10 (Gutsy Gibbon), 8.04 (Hardy Heron)
Xen: 8.04 (Gutsy Gibbon), 8.04 LAMP
Ubuntu is a Debian-based Linux distribution that has rapidly gained a large community of users and developers and is quickly becoming one of the most popular distributions today. Support is available from the Ubuntu community through Web Forums, Mailing Lists, Wiki and Chat (IRC).
Known for its robust and reliable server installations, Debian provides a solid foundation for Ubuntu. You'll use the apt-get package management system for your software installation and updates. Using apt, keeping your system secure and up-to-date is a breeze.
