What is MedaWiki?

MediaWiki is an open source wiki software solution that works very much like an interactive, online encyclopedia. In fact, MediaWiki was originally written to power the extremely popular site Wikipedia. MediaWiki is perfect for use by both organizations and individuals. It is especially useful for organizations allowing them to have a central location for their procedures and all of their other crucial information laid out in an attractive manner. It is also useful because it is easily editable by users who have less technical experience. Users will appreciate the simple wiki markup. That makes it possible for any employee or user to edit a MediaWiki article or add their own content without a problem.

How MediaWiki Got Its Start

MediaWiki can trace much of its origins to the extremely popular wiki site Wikipedia. Without Wikipedia, there's a high likelihood that the software would never gotten its launch.

Wikipedia was started back in 2001. This period of Wikipedia's history is known as Phase I. At the time, Wikipedia was powered by a solution called UseModWiki. While this was a decent start for Wikipedia, it was evident that the site would need a different solution to really have it see the popularity the site founders were envisioning. In particular, speed and additional functionality were the focal points for the next phase of improvements.

A student developer named Magnus Manske began writing a solution to replace UseModWiki. Unlike UseModWiki, which was written with Perl, Manske wrote his solution in PHP and used MySQL as the database backend. His solution was referred to as both "the PHP script" and "phase II". Phase II was rolled out in January 2002 to power Wikipedia.

While Phase II worked well for a little while, Wikipedia began to continue to grow. It was decided that another round of improvements were going to have to be made. Lee Daniel Crocker was tasked with creating phase III. His wiki version was more scalable, a feature that was much needed for the growing needs of Wikipedia.

Phase III was launched in July 2002. Finally, in June of the next year, the Wikimedia Foundation was created. A key Wikipedia contributor named Daniel Mayer recommended that this newest phase and software solution be re-named to MediaWiki. It was also decided that MediaWiki would be released for public use. MediaWiki was officially released a few months later in December of 2003.

MediaWiki Features

One of the reasons MediaWiki is such a popular solution is because of its wide range of features that make it easy to use. Here are a few examples of that functionality:

  • MediaWiki features a large selection of plugins to allow you to extend your wiki site and customize it to your particular needs.
  • MediaWiki uses wikitext format for editing pages meaning that users do not need to know CSS or HTML. This is a key feature in making MediaWiki a user-friendly solution.
  • Edits to a MediaWiki page are written to the database, but any previous versions of the edited page are not deleted. This is to make it easy to revert back to previous pages in the case of a spammer or site vandal making unwanted changes to your site.
  • MediaWiki supports a number of media formats in addition to traditional text including videos and images.
