How to change the document root directory in Plesk

This article describes how to change the document root directory for an account in Plesk. The document root directory is the directory which contains the files for a single website. By default, the document root directory for the primary domain is the httpdocs directory.

If web applications are installed on the site, you cannot modify the document root. Therefore, you should modify the document root before you install any applications.

Changing the document root directory

To change the document root directory in Plesk, follow these steps:

  1. Log in to Plesk.
    If you do not know how to log in to your Plesk account, please see this article.
  2. In the left sidebar, click Websites & Domains.
  3. Locate the domain you want to edit, and then click Hosting Settings:

    The Hosting Settings page appears.

  4. In the Document root text box, type the file path you want to use for the new document root directory.
  5. Click OK. Plesk changes the document root directory.
