Russian software engineer Igor Sysoev was seeking a solution to the C10k problem. This problem was a result of networks not being able to handle a large number of clients simultaneously. This was largely a result of trying to fill the needs of Russian search engine Rambler, which was serving a half billion requests each day (as of 2008). That’s why he began development of nginx in 2002. It was released to the public in October of 2004. The company is based in San Francisco, while being legally incorporated within the British Virgin Islands.
In July of 2011, Sysoev and software developer Maxim Konovalov launched nginx Inc. A few months later in October, nginx, Inc raised $3 million in venture funds.
In February 2012, nginx launched commercial support for companies making use of nginx. Paid nginx Plus (featuring a load balancer, web server, session persistence, configurations via API and health checks built on top of nginx) subscriptions became available in August 2013. The available support includes notifications about large nginx changes, nginx updates and security patches.
